Q If I were not talking to you now, what would you be doing?
A The Leukocare team and I currently spend most of our time and effort branding our leading-edge technologies. So I would probably be talking to clients and potential partners to learn more about their needs and challenges. I would be asking questions about the design of new generations of products containing biologics that require stabilisation during storage and protection during end sterilisation. We are informing potential partners in the medical device, biopharmaceutical and diagnostic worlds about the advantages of our Stabilising and Protecting Solutions (SPS) technology.

Q How did you get in the industry?
A As a spin-off from Frankfurt University, Leukocare had the distinction of possessing overwhelming scientific and technological expertise but it lacked commercial intelligence. My background as a business consultant and entrepreneur with a focus on business administration and finance complemented the scientific expertise of company founder Professor Martin Scholz. Straightaway, I was fascinated and excited by the market potential and broad opportunities of Leukocare. During my time spent working in this business, I have developed a deep understanding of the needs and trends relevant to Leukocare and our many partners.

Q What is the best thing about your work?
A Our technologies enable the development of new and innovative products and processes. Creating and executing innovation and, by this, affecting an important part of the medtech world is an exciting and challenging business. In addition, it is fascinating and satisfying to be responsible for driving the fast and dynamic development of a company such as Leukocare with its versatile technologies and partnerships. The broad range of tasks, functions and responsibilities makes each day different.

Q What is the most important medical device invention ever?
A The treatment of renal insufficiency by haemodialysis is definitely a tremendous invention and represents a significant improvement in the quality of life for patients. Supporting patients in their daily life or bridging them to organ transplantation defines what our aim should be—to improve and save lives and, by doing so, create value for individuals and society as a whole.

Q What should people give more attention to?
A We will face huge challenges during the next 20 years with respect to demographics, healthcare, climate and the availability and global allocation of resources. The Leukocare team will devote its efforts to further improving the quality of global healthcare and, by this, work towards a sustabainable economy and society.

Q What is the most exciting development on the horizon?
A The combination of medical devices with biologics and drugs—in drug-eluting stents or active wound dressings, for example—is an exciting trend that will create enormous value both in business terms and for patients and clinicians. Leukocare’s enabling technologies activate the potential of combination devices by allowing the terminal sterilisation of combination devices with no loss of functionality of the biologics. In this way, Leukocare is driving development of next-generation medical devices.

Q What do you want from your suppliers?
A As an innovation driven company, Leukocare needs the same commitment to innovation from its suppliers. This has to be realised through cooperative relationships and partnerships. By operating this way, we can achieve mutual growth and prosperity.
