Patient Beware, Cautions Lancet Editor
By: Norbert Sparrow

In the wake of the Pip breast implant scandal, Dr Richard Horton, editor of the Lancet, told the BBC that lax medical device regulations are endangering patients and surgeons alike.

"We have a smokescreen of device regulation, which is putting patients at risk. We do not have adequate clinical trials to prove the safety and effectiveness of many devices," said Horton.

In addition to the infamous French breast implants filled with industrial silicone, Horton cites hip replacements and heart valves as examples of deficient devices, reports DeviceTalk.
