MEDTEC Europe Preview: Drag-Finishing Machines Can Be Used to Form Smooth and Precise Surfaces for Orthopaedic Implants

Performing special mass-finishing processes in the preparation of contact surfaces of hip and knee implants, a specialist manufacturer’s drag-finishing machines are supplied with workpiece holders. The DF-series machines from Otec Präzisionsfinish GmbH draw multiple clamped workpieces through a series of grinding and polishing media such that the implants will not collide with each other.

To achieve prosthesis surfaces that are homogeneous, precise and very smooth, the machines apply a two-stage process of wet grinding in a plastic abrasive media with water added, followed by dry polishing achieved by dragging the artificial joints through natural abrasive media impregnated with oil and aluminium oxide. After a total processing time of roughly four hours, the implant surfaces can be as smooth as 0.01 µm Ra. The equipment can be configured to conduct both processes automatically, thus eliminating the need to remove and reclamp workpieces. All process parameters can be set at the machine, documented and stored as programs.
