A modularly designed automation platform was developed specially for complex assembly tasks and includes integrated end-of-line testing capabilities. The Teamed system is offered by Teamtechnik Maschinen und Anlagen GmbH (Freiberg, Germany; www.teamtechnik.com) as a flexible, space-saving approach to the manufacturing of medical devices and pharmaceutical products. Taking advantage of available options, users can have the platform configured as any of a variety of turnkey production systems. Unlike systems with fixed synchronisation, the platform can easily be extended as production volume increases; a manual workstation can be upgraded to a semiautomated or fully automatic high-performance station with throughputs exceeding 100 parts per minute.
A special feature of the flexible automation platform is that it incorporates processes from clinical phase I and phase II prototype production directly into serial production, thus ensuring that critical processes have been verified effective before the platform configured for production begins full-scale manufacturing. Also, product and process technology can be modified at any time, beginning with the engineering phase and until just before standard operating procedures are established. Built from stainless or powder-coated steel and configured as standard for Class 10,000 cleanliness and optionally for cleanroom class 1000, the platform accommodates even complex high-precision process technologies easily; examples include ultrasound and laser welding, dosing, and force displacement and torque testing. Various transport systems can be integrated according to whether a process is fast-cycling or is a manual or buffering stage requiring a free-floating transport system. The manufacturer supplies the system with a complete control and software system and with full-coverage documentation and training.
